If you are planning to make your outdoor space a renovation or a new look, but you can’t find the right planter with the price you like, you have probably checked modern looking cement planters on Pinterest. Why not make your own? You’ll be surprised how easy and cheap this is to make.
On this project, the materials used are recycled materials like small milk cartons and old plastic food containers. Also, you’ll be needing sand concrete/cement mix, water, and paint spray for decoration.
Start with pouring the sand concrete/cement mix into your container. The ratio of the mixture is 1 part water to 4 parts concrete (1:4), therefore if you’ll use only 2 cups concrete half, you’ll only need half a cup of water.
Use a stick to mix until the mixture has a peanut butter-like consistency.
Pour the mixture in a carton. Next, insert your smaller container. You may want to put something heavy in the smaller container to weigh it down and secure it.
You can wipe off the extra concrete on the sides. Let the cement planter set for at least 24 hours. Once dried, tear the cardboard and remove the cup on the inside.
Optional: You can sand the rough edges for a smoother finish.
The fun part is to decorate it depending on your preferences. In this video, the newly formed cement planter is painted on an angle, with a chalkboard paint for a matte look.
To use this, simply fill up the base with soil and place the plant inside.
Tip: If you are planting directly into the concrete planter, make sure that you make a drainage hole at the bottom, otherwise the plant roots will become too wet, and the plant will die.
