Going Vegan? Try This Quinoa & Black Bean Veggie Burger – Strangewich

Something strange on the title? Yes, I know but I didn’t misspell it. You are reading it right as well – a ‘Strangewich’. If you have seen the Hellmann’s Mayonnaise video, you know what I’m talking about. What is it? According to Hellmann’s website, a ‘Strangewich’, which is hot on Twitter, is a sandwich that’s transformed by an unexpected twist to make it even more delicious. Basically, your favorite recipe that is delivered and done in an unexpected way with the help of some creativity and Hellmann’s mayo. Try this recipe, a healthy and flavorful veggie burger, so you know what I mean.



  • 1 ¼ cup cooked quinoa
  • 4 oz. sun dried tomatoes (packed in oil), drained and minced
  • 1 portobello mushroom, de-stemmed and minced
  • 3/4 cup onion, minced
  • 1-15 oz. can of black beans, drained and rinsed
  • ¼ Tbsp parsley, chopped
  • 2 Tbsp chopped mint
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp coriander, ground
  • 1 tsp cumin, ground
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil

Sandwich Spread:

  • 1 cup Hellmann’s Mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup basil, chopped fine
  • 2 Tbsp chives, minced
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced
  • Salt and pepper

For Assembly:

  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup shredded raw red beets
  • 1 package sprouts
  • 8 slices cucumber
  • 1 avocado, pitted and sliced
  • 1 head of Bibb lettuce


1. In a medium bowl, mix the remaining ingredients using a potato masher
2. Divide mixture into 6 patties and refrigerate for a few hours or until firm.
3. Once firm, bake patties in the oven at 350 Fahrenheit for 20 mins or cook patties in a skillet until golden brown (15-20 mins)
4. Mix the sandwich spread ingredients together, season with salt, pepper, and cayenne if desired.

To assemble, use 1-2 lettuce leaves as your “bun.” Top with sliced cucumber, a dash of your sandwich spread, then add your patty, top it with avocado, and ample mixture of carrots, beets, and sprouts.
